Rhino Poaching Crisis in Southern Africa
In 2010 more than 260 rhinos were killed in South Africa for their horns, this is almost double the amount killed in 2009. Poaching operations are slick, professional and well funded. All over Southern Africa conservation groups, governments and game lodges are working together to end this illegal industry and World Challenge is joining in!
In Namibia the Waterberg Plateau is home to a number of threatened species including black and white rhinos, sable antelope and blue wildebeest. Nearly 40 rangers and wardens work to protect the park which was founded in 1972.
These rangers are sent on anti-poaching patrols, during which they have basic tin huts to stay in, some without a toilet or shower.
World Challenge teams will be working alongside the rangers to improve these huts in order for longer patrols to take place. Teams will be building extensions to these huts for rangers to store their tools and equipment, a basic structure to cover the cooking and campfire area and potentially a rudimentary toilet and shower block.
We are very excited about this project!
Alongside this World Challenge are helping to build a brand new school for the Rangers Children! The below picture is of two of the children who will benefit from the new school World Challenge are helping to build.
